Floating in water ..easy steps to try !!
For most people, a fear of deep water means that they believe they will sink to the bottom. To shake off that belief I recommend exploring your own buoyancy in the shallow end. But have you ever tried to sit on the bottom of the pool? Try it the next time you go swimming. Stand in the pool, then take your feet off the ground and point your bottom to the pool floor, feet lifting, keeping your torso vertical. Don’t forget to breathe out gently. You’ll find that it’s actually pretty difficult to get into a sitting position on the bottom of the pool. You will probably bob up quite easily allowing you to regain your feet.
Next time you try this you can bob up in a “mushroom float” position, that means you will curl into a little ball to come up, then release your legs to land. When you are happy with that, try lengthening out into a glide once your “mushroom” has bobbed up. The final stage is to roll from the glide to a backfloat. When you have mastered this sequence, you will not only have a good idea of how hard it is to sink, but have a great strategy for coming up to the surface and rolling to a position where breathing is easy, ie the backfloat. At this stage you should know that deep water is actually more buoyant that shallow water, so when you are ready to try this in the deep end you’ll find it much easier.
