This qualification is valid for 3 years and must be revalidated on a 2 day refresher course.

Course Information

This qualification covers:

  • The ability to act safely, promptly and effectively when an emergency arises in the workplace
  • The ability to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation promptly and effectively
  • Administering first aid safely, promptly and effectively to a casualty who is unconscious, wounded or bleeding, burned or scalded, suffering from bone injury, muscle
  • injury, joint injury, shock, eye injury, poisoned, or overcome by gas/fumes
  • Transporting a casualty to safety as required by the circumstances of the workplace
  • The recognition of minor illnesses and taking appropriate action
  • Maintaining records and providing written information to a doctor or hospital if required
  • Understanding the importance of personal hygiene in first aid procedures
  • Understanding the legal framework for first aid provision at work
  • Demonstrating the use of first aid equipment provided in the workplace

Mandatory Units

  • Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (A/504/4517)
  • Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace (F/504/4518)

Assessment Criteria

  • Continual assessment by the tutor
  • Demonstrate the ability to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation on an adult manikin
  • Demonstrate the ability to carry out first aid for an unconscious casualty
  • Demonstrate the ability to carry out first aid for a workplace emergency situation

Emergency First Aid at Work

Pre-Requisites

6 Recommended Guided Learning Hours

Course Information

This qualification covers:

  • Understanding the importance of preventing cross-infection
  • Understanding the need for recording incidents and actions
  • The use of available equipment
  • Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • Administering first aid to a casualty who is unconscious, having a seizure, choking, wounded and bleeding or suffering from shock
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Provide first aid care to a casualty for minor injuries including small cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns, scalds and small splinters

Assessment Criteria

  • Continual assessment by the tutor

CPR & AED

The aim of the CPR and AED course is to enable candidates to deliver the safe application of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Pre-Requisites

  • Be 16 years of age or older

Validity of Award

This qualification is valid for 2 years.

Candidates must refresh this qualification by undertaking the Advanced Resuscitation programme annually.

Length of Course

5 Notional Guided Learning Hours:

  • 4 Recommended Guided Learning Hours
  • 1 Non-Contact Guided Learning Hours

Course Information

This qualification covers:

  • Effective administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Effective usage of an AED as both a team leader and a single operator for a casualty with no shock indicated, a casualty with shock indicated, and an unknown scenario

Mandatory Units

  • Basic Life Support and Using an Automated External Defibrillator
