Hi, after being diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee earlier this year, I decided that swimming could be the best type of non weight bearing exercise, to help me lose weight, get fitter and help to tone muscles. Without increasing knee pain. Whilst at the pool I realised that although I could swim after a fashion, my water skills were not that great. I did not like putting my face in the water and was out of puff in no time from poor swim breathing skills. I also saw it as an opportunity to learn something new,( aged 57) never too old to learn! I had taken early retirement in January and was looking to do new things and gain new skills. I looked online for swimming lessons for adults. I saw Sandra’s website and liked the idea of 1 to 1 lessons. I looked at the testimonials and where she was based and noted she was close by in Glasgow. After sending a communication I received a date and time to have a taster lesson without obligation at the Marriot. When I arrived at the pool, Sandra was very welcoming and put me at ease. Once we had discussed the issues with the knee and my aspirations to swim better. She recommended that learning Front crawl may be the best option as less impact on the knee. I should also mention the facilities at the Marriot are very good and aid learning in a safe, clean, calm environment. The first thing she addressed was my fear of putting my face in water. By end of first session I had discovered that swim goggles simplified being able to see under water… who knew!! Also I had gained a bit of confidence on the need to be full length and flat in the water by practicing gliding face down, through the water. I also learned that you can hold your breath for longer than you think under water. Amazing ! I remember coming away after that session feeling quite accomplished in such a short space of time and my confidence had improved greatly. It prompted me to buy my own goggles and sign up for 4 – 1/2 hour classes with Sandra. Payment is in advance, but in my opinion your committing to learn, so fine by me. I have since had 4 classes and I can see improvement. My front crawl is coming along but practice in my own time away from lessons has also been key. Putting Sandra’s teaching into practice between times. Sandra’s practical tips and down to earth approach has made learning fun. If you are looking to learn to swim or improve your swim skills I would recommend Sandra , without a doubt.
